ROBERTS, Lewes (1596-1640). The Merchants Map of Commerce: Wherein the Universal Manner and Matter of Trade is Compendiously Handled. London: for R. Horn, 1671.
2o (309 x 192 mm). 4 engraved folding maps by John Overton of: America, Africa, Asia and Europe (marginal tears, some repaired, some affecting text; worming sometimes affecting text; each map mounted on paper; most maps torn at margins affecting border; some with holes at folds and edges; browning to America map; large portion of Europe map missing and trimmed affecting border). Modern calf; modern cloth slipcase.
Second edition, "corrected and much enlarged," of Roberts's major work (first published in 1638) and an early systematic treatise on the subject. This comprehensive guidebook "provided not only the standard topographical information sought by English travellers abroad, but also full details of local commodities, currency, weights and measures, and rates of exchange. It was an immediate success with the mercantile community, and revised editions were published in 1671, 1677, and 1700" (DNB). Roberts worked for both the East India Company, of which he became a director, and the Levant Company at Constantinople. "The description of 'America and the Provinces thereof,' pp. 47--64, contains much fuller accounts of New England, New Netherland, and other places, than that in the first edition." (Sabin). The map of America in the second state with the "White/horse neere the Fountaine Tavern" imprint. Alden & Landis 671/233; Burden The Mapping of North America 401; Sabin 71907; Wing R-1599.
