Lot Essay

The medallioned chair-back relates to designs published in the mid 1780s by Hepplewhite in The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788, pl. 6. and to the 'New Catherine Wheel' model designed by Gillows circa 1785 (L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs, 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 269.)
