This stool with serpentine legs festooned with flowers issuing from Roman acanthus clasps and terminating in foliated and embossed cartouches may possibly be the one sold by a Nobleman, Christie's London, 2 October 1975, lot 35. It comprises part of a larger suite of which other examples are known. A library chair from the collection of Arthur D. Leidesdorf was sold Sotheby & Co., London, 27-28 June 1974, lot 67 and is illustrated in C. Claxton Stevens and S. Whittington, Eighteenth Century English Furniture: The Norman Adams Collection, 1983, p. 42. Another pair from the collection of George D. Widener was sold Christie's New York, 12-13 October 1995, lot 194. A matching settee belonging to Ruth Vanderbilt Twombly was sold Parke-Bernet Galleries, Inc., New York, 6-8 January 1955, lot 469.
