Lot Essay

The vendor informs us that this katana was surrendered to his late father, Brigadier (Retd.) J. Heptinstall, at Government House in Hong Kong. At the time he was Adjutant of No. 5 Commando which had been sent to secure Hong Kong after the Japanese surrender in late August 1945. The officer, believed to be a general in command of an infantry brigade, handed over his sword, along with others, as part of a ceremony to mark the formal surrender of Hong Kong on 16th September 1945.
