Lot Essay

Towards the end of his life Cox produced a number of small pictures in which travellers are shown crossing open landscapes in windy or stormy weather. Comparable examples of the present watercolour can be seen in A Windy Day (Tate Gallery, no. 2666), and The Cross Roads (Birmingham City Art Gallery).

For other David Cox watercolours see lots 155 and 157-8, 161.
