Lot Essay

Evelyn's grandfather was Sir Andrew Barclay Walker. Born in Ayrshire, following his education, Walker joined his father in the family brewing business, which he expanded. He became a councilor of Liverpool City Council in 1867 and served as mayor in 1873-4 and 1876-7. He built the Walker Art Gallery which was opened and which he presented to city in September 1877. He was also responsible for the building of engineering laboratories for Liverpool University College and he contributed considerable sums to the arts and to charity in Liverpool throughout his life. In 1890 he was made the first honorary freeman of Liverpool and he was presented with his portrait by William Quiller Orchardson in recognition of his services to the city.
