Lot Essay

Topolski went on a tour of the war fronts between 1944-1945. He travelled as far as China and saw Burma, India, Palestine, Africa, Egypt, Syria and Italy before witnessing the end of the war in Germany. The present work is based on scenes he witnessed in 1944 when he was accompanying the Polish 2nd Corps in Italy. He completed his paintings in the studio either from notes or from memory.
