On 21 March 1686, the City of Lyons voted to erect an equestrian monument to the Sun King, Louis XIV, and the Marchal de Villeroy entrusted the commission to the Dutch sculptor Martin van den Bogaert, better known today by the French form of his name, Desjardins. Erected in the Place Bellecour in 1713, it was destroyed during the revolution in 1792. Today, only a foot remains, housed in the Muse historique in Lyons.
