Lot Essay

The series Underground by Xia Ying consists of portraits of actual mineworkers, blackened by charcoal. It is a tribute to mineworkers, who work under dangerous circumstances underground. Through photographing them, Xia Ying wants to put the underground to the surface and make people aware of the risks mineworkers run each day.
