Edo period (early 19th century), signed Tatsuke Takamasu saku (act. 1804-18)
The writing box with rounded corners and fitted lid decorated in varicolored hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, kirikane, inlaid in shell with a cicada seated on the side of a large, red gourd hanging from a leafy vine, the underside of the lid decorated in red and gold togidashi with several leafy stalks, the lower tray with a slate inkstone and a mixed-metal waterdropper (suiteki) in the form of a lobed melon, all on a roiro and sparse nashiji ground, the wood exterior with deep grooves and grain, the exterior edges trimmed in hirame and the rims fundame
