A lacquer writing box (suzuribako)
Edo period (19th century)
The writing box with overhanging lid decorated in gold hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, kirikane and nashiji with monkeys in and beneath a willow tree, the underside of the lid decorated with a pheasant on a rock with pine on a nashiji ground, the box fitted with a slate inkstone and the metal fittings to hold a waterdropper (suiteki), now missing; nashiji ground, distressed condition
8 1/8 x 7½ x 1 7/8 in. (20.5 x 19 x 4.2cm.)
