A lacquer writing box (suzuribako)
Taisho period (early 20th century)
The large writing box with rounded corners and overhanging lid varicolored gold, silver and red hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, gold foil, togidashi, kirikane and nashiji on a roiro and evenly placed sparse gold hirame ground with a Sanbaso dancer on stage, the underside of the lid decorated with a plum tree in bloom and arrowroot and dandelions below on a nashiji ground, the box decorated with scattered plum blossoms and early spring ferns and fitted with a slate inkstone with fundame rim and the metal fittings to hold a round waterdropper (suiteki), now missing; nashiji ground
