A RARE GERMAN 70-BORE WHEEL-LOCK PETRONAL WITH LEFT-HAND LOCK
LATE 16TH CENTURY
With slightly swamped two-stage reblued rifled sighted barrel decorated with gold-damascened foliage, flat lock spanned from the right side decorated with further gold-damascened foliage and with sliding pan-cover, safety-catch, enclosed wheel, the gilt cover chiselled with trophies surrounding a lion-mask, and applied gilt panel beneath the wheel-cover chiselled with a serpent emerging from the mouth of a bearded man, fruitwood full stock profusely inlaid with white staghorn dots, tendrils and flower-heads inhabited by mythical birds, all bordered by foliate engraved bands, and with small applied panels engraved with birds, a gentleman in contemporary costume, and various masks, the white staghorn butt-plate engraved with the arms of Saxony and a lion within a small cartouche, gilt trigger-guard chiselled with scrollwork, and later wooden ramrod with engraved white staghorn tip (fore-end cracked and repaired, some restoration work throughout)
