Lot Essay

Although not with an ivorine inventory label, the chairs are almost certainly those described in the Cowdray 1919 inventory as part of no. 212 (as 'A Set of Two Queen Anne Love Seats and Six Armchairs'). The 'Love Seats' described are the following lot.

The design of the armchair with its tall padded back, and lightly out-scrolled carved arms recalls period examples, circa 1680, illustrated in P. Macquoid, The History of English Furniture, The Age of Walnut, figs. 23 and 25.
