A FINE GERMAN SPORTING CROSSBOW WITH CRANEQUIN
LATE 16TH EARLY 17TH CENTURY
With robust steel bow retained by cords, small iron loop, wooden tiller swelling towards the middle and veneered in bone panels, those on each side engraved with Biblical scenes, animals and mythical beasts all within a woodland setting, the top flat engraved with scrollwork around the bone nut, and faceted iron trigger; together with an iron cranequin with turned wooden handle, the gearbox engraved with a mark and struck with a maker's mark
