Lot Essay

The present fender with its deployment of Japanesque cloud formation pattern above cross hatch ornamentation recalls the work of Thomas Jeckyll (1827-1881) who as a designer for the Norfolk based metalworking firm of Barnard, Bishop & Barnards produced gates, one of which is at the royal residence of Sandringham, garden benches and seats, fire grates, stoves and fenders. The Japanesque cloud formation pattern or sometimes referred to as the wave pattern is a recurring motif in Jekyll's designs and can be seen on another fireplace fender made by Barnard, Bishop and Barnards after 1875 (Susan Weber Soros, Catherine Arbuthnott, Thomas Jeckyll Architect & Designer 1827-1881, Yale University Press, 2003, p. 222, fig. 6-57).
