Lot Essay

This beautifully crafted and neatly fitted miniature dressing-table nécessaire is typical of early 19th century Parisian manufactures sold in the fashionable shops of the Palais Royal, just above the Louvre. The same attractive combination of engraved mother-of-pearl set within carefully tooled ormolu borders is characteristic of this fine production. A similar ormolu-mounted mother-of-pearl nécessaire was sold at Christie's London, 10 July 2008, lot 1 (£6,250 with premium). A further related miniature musical box in the shape of a windmill was sold at Christie's London, 5 July 2007, lot 8 (£15,600 with premium).
