Lot Essay

Gilt and patinated bronze signed examples of Apollon et l'Amour, or Le Jour and its pendant pair Vénus et L'Amour, or La Nuit, are illustrated in M. Poletti and A. Richarme, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux Sculpteur catalogue raisonné, Paris, 2003, no. AN. OD 2, p. 175 and no. AN. OD. 3, p. 176. Another example of Vénus et L'Amour, with Graux Marly foundry cachet, is recorded in the Collection Ginépro (Exhibition catalogue, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux 1827-1875, Nice, Musées de Nice, 1980, no. 1, pl. 1).
