A LARGE BRONZE RITUAL WINE VESSEL AND COVER, YOU
EARLY WESTERN ZHOU DYNASTY, 11TH CENTURY BC
Of oval section and pear shape, the upper body cast in low relief on a leiwen band on each side with a pair of birds confronted on an animal mask and flanked by dragons with bodies that are just above and parallel to those of the birds and which face the loops which secure the ring-form terminals of the rope-twist handle, the domed cover with a deep collar and a similar bird and dragon band below a segmented knop cast as six long-eared masks, the whole raised on a pedestal foot encircled by a band of 'eyes' and tapering diagonals, with a two-character inscription cast in the bottom of the interior and inside the cover, with mottled olive-grey patina and some milky green encrustation

Lot Essay

The two-character inscription cast in the bottom of the interior and inside the cover reads, Zu Xu, which may be literally translated as 'Ancestor Xu'.
