Lot Essay

Double bottles were designed to hold two different kinds of snuff. The true snuff aficionado could distinguish the many different flavors, ages and grades of snuff; as such, double and even triple bottles evolved to carry more than one type.

A virtually identical bottle from the collection of Martha M. Renk, which had been collected by Fritz A. Brockelmann in Canton between 1883-1899, was sold in these rooms, 20 September 2005, lot 502.
