AN UNUSUAL CELADON-GROUND FAMILLE VERTE BOWL
KANGXI PERIOD (1662-1722)
With deep flaring sides painted on the exterior with a leafy stem of red Chinese lantern plant, bearing one gilded flower and bud and a few iron-red 'lanterns' (husks), one shown open to expose the iron-red fruit within, with further 'lanterns' on the reverse, all in famille verte reserved on a pale celadon ground below the brown-dressed rim, with a small stylized flower head in underglaze blue within a double circle in the bottom of the interior, with an apocryphal da ming nian zhi mark on the base
4¾ in. (12.2 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

A similar bowl of slightly smaller size (11.9 cm.) with the same mark, dated 18th century, is described in Illustrated Catalogue of Ch'ing Enamelled Ware, Percival David Foundation, 1973, p. 17, no. 840. A very similar bowl with cover, with Kangxi marks, in the Qing Court collection, Beijing, is illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum - 38 - Porcelain in Polychrome and Contrasting Colours, Hong Kong, 1999, no. 152.
