Lot Essay

Shangjun is the 'zi' name of Zhou Bin, a native of Zhangzhou in Fujian province, who is believed to have worked during the Kangxi period, and was known for his fine carving, especially of seal finials. For a discussion of Zhou Bin see G. Tsang and H. Moss, Arts from the Scholar's Studio, Hong Kong, 1986, pp. 84-86, where a pair of baifurong seals, no. 43, and a niujiao dong figure of a luohan, no. 44, ascribed to him, are illustrated.
