Lot Essay

An added note on the first folio indicates that this manuscript belonged to Emir 'Abd al-Qader al-Hasani,(1808-1883 AD) the illustrious Algerian leader who fought against the French in Algeria. He died in
exile in Damascus.

Yusuf bin Sulayman al-A'lam al-Shantamari is known to have written a commentary on the six pre-Islamic poets, called Sharh al-A'lam al-Shantamari 'ala Diwan al-Shu'ara al-Sitta. The poetry of Imru' al-Qays comes first in his work. Antoher copy is in the Library of the University of Leyden (Or.14.029).
