Lot Essay

This work was originally commissioned by Shaykh al-Islam
Minkarizade Yahya Efendi (d. 1678 AD).
Hamdi Mahmud Pasha was the Ottoman Governor of Rumeli in 1823 and then between 1834 and 1836. He died in 1838 AD. Whilst the finely stamped and gilt binding might have been executed in Constantinople, the manuscript was copied in Sofia. The scribe's teacher, Shaykh Salih, was the Shaykh of the dervish lodge of Kapan in Sofia.
