Lot Essay

The Terra Nova left the docks on 1 June, 1910 and sailed for
Cardiff to load the Welsh coal donated to the expedition. 'Cardiff held a special place in the expedition's heart as the city which had given
them the most fervent support. The Lord Mayor now produced a further
£1,000 for the fund. In recognition Scott promised to make Cardiff the Terra Nova's first port of call on his return' (D. Preston, A
First Rate Tragedy
, London: 1997, p.123). This promise was not
forgotten and the second photograph recalls the return to mainland
Britain of the Terra Nova. After two days spent painting and
cleaning up in the Scilly Islands, the Terra Nova, under the
command of Evans, docked in Cardiff on 14 June 1913.
