A FINE AND RARE LATE MEDIEVAL GOLD DEVOTIONAL PENDANT
Of dented heart shape, made of fine gold, the inside applied with a chiseled figure of St. George and the dragon which is riveted to the base, the outer shell engraved with fourteen stars representing the fourteen holy helpers, divided in four quarters, 19 x 16 x 6 mm, possibly English, Windsor, 15th Century
This pendant might be a commissioned jewel for a pilgrim, possibly bought near St. George Chapel, Windsor, as it was a popular destination for pilgrims during the late medieval period, venerating Saint George. The fourteen holy helpers, a group of saints venerated together in Roman Catholicism, were often despicted on jewels thus creating strong amuletic power, especially against diseases like the Bubonic plague or black death that swept through Europe in the 14th century
