Lot Essay

In Ekin Saçlioglu's fourth solo show, I'm Shocked but I'm Not Surprised, she is inspired by either daily incidents or her personal experiences. Although retaining her narrative quality, the works seem to diverge from the artist's usual fictional world and focus on daily incidents and personal experiences, while editorializing on social issues at the same time. Saçlioglu, in each work, takes in hand a different incident, influenced by associated tensions. One of her pieces in the exhibit, The Chief is based on the tragic real life account of 'Reis' (the Chief), a dog that was seriously injured as a result of cruelty for the sake of entertainment. The barbarism unique to humanity and the contradiction between the topic and the shiny surfaces is one of the main components from her latest series of works aptly reflecting the title of the series I'm shocked but I'm not surprised.
