Lot Essay

In 2005, Rokni Haerizadeh's works were exhibited for the first time outside Iran, at Third Line gallery in Dubai. The Telephone was amongst the highlights of the exhibition.

Rokni Haerizadeh was born in Tehran in 1978, in the shadow of the Islamic Revolution. Through his works, he reveals his appetite for Persian and Western aesthetics and literature. The present lot titled The Telephone, evokes Rokni's inspiration from a variety of art historical movements and his obsession with Freudian dream worlds. In a gestural and abstract style, he depicts an interior scene with intense colours, intentional lack of perspective, but also with irony and an acerbic sense of humor. His work is reminiscent of abstract expressionism and surrealism. Indeed, through a free-flowing style and expressive brush strokes, Rokni evokes the spirit of his generation and his extraordinary ability to combine the popular cultural of Iran with the urban rhythm of the present.

Rokni Haerizadeh is one of the most important figures of the contemporary Iranian art scene. He has participated in exhibitions around the world. His career is acclaimed internationally and his paintings now are featured in major private collections such as the Charles Saatchi Collection in London.
