Lot Essay

The arms are those of Mildred impaling Harman, for Daniel Mildred (d.1827) and his wife Elizabeth (1765-1838), daughter of the banker John Harman (1738-1817) of Messers Harman and Co. Daniel Mildred's father, also Daniel (1731-1788) was a banker and merchant and was one of the early campaigners for the abolition of the slave trade. Both father and son worked for the family business Masterman and Mildred in Lombard Street, London.
