Each corona surmounted by eight acanthus sprays and with pinecone boss, suspending a pierced dish profusely cast with flaming torches, paterae and foliage, with eight Minerva masks each issuing twin eagle's-mask branches and with scallop-shell shade to reverse, fitted for electricity

Lot Essay

These impressive chandeliers are typical of the ouvre of the great Empire bronzier Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843). He established his workshop in 1776 having trained under Pierre Gouthière and went on to establish premises in the fashionable rue Taitbout, Paris. He was noted for producing some of the finest ormolu of the age gaining a gold medal at the 1806 Paris Exposition Publique des Produits de l'Industrie. A similar lot was sold, Christie's South Kensington, 19 June 1996, lot 590.
