Lot Essay

The Venetian tradition of producing this kind of elaborate baroque furniture incorporating blackamoor figures began in the mid-17th century and continues to this day, however the demand for this kind of furniture reached its peak in the late 19th century when the industry enjoyed a renaissance, fitting perfectly with the opulent aesthetic of the day.

A closely related table of slightly simpler design, but displaying a similarly draped serpentine top and rock-work base with seated blackamoor, possibly from the same workshop, was sold from the collection of Roberto Polo, Sotheby's New York, 3 November 1989, lot 79.
