A DONYATT INCISED SLIPWARE DOCUMENTARY PUZZLE-JUG
1790, THE UNDERSIDE INCISED JOHN BROWN (?) MAKER
The oviform jug with pierced neck, the tubular rim with a single spout, incised with a drinking verse, above a panel with further inscription, the date 1790 to the lower left, flanked by tulips
8 5/8 in. (21.9 cm.) high

Specialist note

John Brown was recorded as a potter in Donyatt in 1819; no other pottery bearing his signature or initials has been identified. This appears to be one of the earliest signed pieces of Donyatt pottery recorded.
