Lot Essay

The French artist Jacques Callot (1592-1635), are regarded as the source of inspiration for the present spoon, who first published his engravings of nomadic gypsies, beggars and itinerant musicians entitled Les Bohêmiens in 1622. Further engravings included Les Grandes Misères de la Guerre, and Les Gueux were published in 1630. A group of similar spoons after the designs of Jacques Callot are illustrated by Edward Pinto, Treen and other Wooden Bygones, London, 1969, section IV, pl. 83.
