The fork handle carved as a female saint, with a facetted ferrule and four tines; the knife carved as a personification of Justice, with a facetted ferrule and blade stamped 'I' with a heart above
The fork: 5½ in. (14 cm.) high; the knife: 7¾ in. (20 cm.) high

Lot Essay

These two handles are appear to be carved by the same hand or workshop, exhibiting similar carved details in the headdress and treatment of the drapery. For a comparable example of a fork mounted with a carved figure of Justice, possibly English see ed. Peter Brown, British Cutlery, An Illustrated History of Design, Evolution and Use, York Civic Trust, 2001, fig. 35, pp. 77.
