Lot Essay

A virtually identical Pembroke table by Gillows was sold anonymously Christie's, London, 4 July 2002, lot 198 (£17,925 including premium) and illustrated in Susan Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 2008, vol.I, p.257, pl.258. Stuart notes a particularly interesting feature of this table is the table's 'hollow corner', a motif repeated in the stringing on the drawer and above the legs.
