Lot Essay

A pair of pedestals of this same design are in the collection of the Earls of Harewood at Harewood House, Yorkshire. A mahogany pair of this design is shown in the Entrance Hall of Home House, Portman Square (illustrated in Dr. M. Whinney, , London, 1969, p.85). The latter may have been acquired for the Robert Adam-designed townhouse by the late Samuel Courtauld, founder of the Courtauld Institute, who lived there from 1927 to 1932.
