Of oval section, surmounted by a mythical beast with bifurcated tail, its head turned towards the rear, the seal face carved with four characters reading chang cun jing wei, the stone of an attractive white tone with russet inclusions

Lot Essay

The four characters chang cun jing wei may be translated as 'to always respect and fear', a didactic phrase which reminds one to continually respect and fear the law of nature, and to uphold one's moral values. The phrase originates from the Confucian text 'The Doctrine of the Mean', which was written circa 500 BC.
