MAX ERNST (1891-1976)
Max Ernst was a German born painter and sculptor, perhaps best remembered as one of the key proponents of Surrealism. Though self-taught, Ernst was inspired by the fantastical imagery found in the works of artists such as de Chirico and went on to found the Cologne Dada group alongside Jean Arp and Johannes Theodor Baargeld between 1919 and 1921. Throughout the course of his career Ernst continued to experiment with a variety of different media including collage, frottage (rubbing) and decalcomania. The following series of coloured etchings illustrate the breadth and inventiveness found in Ernst's printmaking oeuvre.
