Lot Essay

The present vase belongs to a group of similarly shaped Ming style vases which were popular during the Qianlong period, and continued throughout the succeding reigns until the Xuantong period. Tongzhi-marked vases of this type are very rare ,however, and few examples have been published. A pair of Tongzhi vases of this pattern is illustrated in Selected Ceramics from the Collection of Mr and Mrs J. M. Hu, Shanghai Museum, 1989, pl. 97.
