Lot Essay

The unusual border of pendent discs framing the main decorative band appears to be very rare. A similarly-proportioned jar decorated with the same minor bands but with dragons, rather than phoenix in the Topkapi Palace Museum is illustrated by T. Misugi in Chinese Porcelain Collections in the Near East, Topkapi and Ardebil, Volume Two, p. 128, no. T59; and another similar 'dragon' jar was sold at Christie's London, 10 December 1990, lot 160A.
