A SMALL DING-TYPE CARVED JAR WITH COVER
SONG DYNASTY (960-1279)
The thinly potted, angled sides rising to a thin unglazed rim, well carved on the exterior with feathery foliate scrolls, covered in a white glaze with a slight greenish tint stopping before the low foot ring to expose the fine white biscuit, the cover carved with petals radiating from a small knot at the slightly domed centre to the flat edge

Lot Essay

Compare a Dingyao example of very similar form and decoration in the collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Catalogue of the Special Exhibition of Ting Ware White Porcelain, Taipei, 1987, pl. 14. This example with no cover has its rim bound in copper.
