A RARE LARGE MING TIXI LACQUER DISH
MING DYNASTY, 15TH/16TH CENTURY
The circular dish of shallow rounded sides, well carved in relief through layers of black and cinnabar-red lacquer with bands of ruyi scrolls radiating from a central quatrefoil flower head, the reverse with a classic scroll band above the foot rim

Lot Essay

A very similar example was included in the exhibition, Dragon and Phoenix, Chinese Lacquer Ware, The Lee Family Collection, Tokyo, The Museum of East Asian Art, City of Cologne, 1990, illustrated in the Catalogue, pp. 52-53, pl. 12. Another slightly smaller example (32 cm. diam.) was sold at Christie's London, 7 June 1993, lot 129. A lobed example with similar decoration and of smaller size (24.5 cm. diam.) is in the Nanjing Museum, illustrated in Zhongguo qiqi quanji, vol. 5, Fujian, 1995, p. 38, pl. 38.
