Lot Essay

In 1930 Gustave De Smet moved to the countryside of Deurle. The landscape and the life of the farmers became his main inspiration. We see a minor stylistic change in the paintings he made around that time. These works are characterized by a velvety and soft paint expression. The present lot is considered to be one of the the first works in this new style. The harmonized colour patches provide a balanced composition (see: P. Boyens, Gust. De Smet, Antwerp, 1989. pp. 240, 244).
