Lot Essay

Whilst studying at the 'Royal College of Art' Dury used his considerable talent for drawing, and natural flare for pop art to win a commission from the Sunday Times, to produce this artwork to illustrate an article to be published in the newspaper's colour supplement. The article was to discuss the endless myth of movies and filmstars through scanning the film scene of the 1960s, which they describe as a landscape haunted by its past, and harassed by its future. They began by discussing the film stars of the past - "once they were stars but now they are 'Immortals' - belonging securely to the legends they helped create." Hence Dury's artwork contains forty portraits of stars from the golden age of film.
