A COLLECTION OF SWORD FITTINGS FORMED BY HERBERT GRAHAM CANNON
Herbert Graham Cannon, F.R.S. (1897-1963) was a prominent zoologist and member of the University of Manchester for over thirty years. In 1920 he was appointed as lecturer in zoology at Imperial College which was followed in 1926 by his appointment to the Chair of Zoology at the University of Sheffield and in 1931 to the Beyer Chair of Zoology at the University of Manchester. Here he served in many capacities, as Dean of the Faculty of Science, as Pro-Vice Chancellor, and as representative of the University on the governing body of the new University College in North Staffordshire. His two well known works, The Evolution of Living Things and Lamark and Modern Genetics were published in 1958 and 1959 respectively.
Apart from his zoological interests Graham Cannon was an enthusiastic and informed collector of of Japanese sword fittings. He persuaded the late Mr R.W. Lloyd to bequeath his Japanese collection to the Manchester Museum and in 1959 the museum committee asked him to take on the Honorary Keepership of this collection.
