Lot Essay

"In 1957, while in Rome, George Rickey made the first of his Ommagio a Bernini sculptures. These works were based on an idea that the artist gleaned from his knowledge of classical art. Gian Lorenzo Bernini's The Ecstacy of Saint Therese -- 1645-52, is a marble sculpture in teh Cornaro Chapel of Santa Maria della Vittoria in Rome. Behind teh sculpture, and coming down from above, Bernini positioned gilt rays shining behind teh figure of Saint Theresa. Rickey has taken the idea of these rays, and co-opted them to his own purposes. The first sculpture in the series was made in 1957, the last circa 1959-60." (M. Davidson III, George Rickey: The Early Works, Atglen, 2004, p. 167)
