Château Mouton-Rothschild--Vintage 1995
Pauillac, 1er cru classé
The label: Crayon and acrylic on paper by Antoni Tapies
The artist: The life and work of the Catalan painter and sculptor Antoni Tpies, born in Barcelona in 1923, are firmly rooted in his native city.
It was in Barcelona that he completed his studies and, in 1948, founded the art review Dau al Set. He subsequently discovered Eastern philosophies and, during a stay in Paris, "Art Informel" with Dubuffet and Fautrier.
He began to achieve international recognition in the 1950s, winning prestigious awards including the Venice Biennale and the Picasso medal. The city of Barcelona commissioned a monumental sculpture, Homage to Picasso, in 1983 and also houses the Antoni Tpies Foundation, inaugurated in 1990. Tpies is now considered one of the leading contemporary artists and his works are displayed in many of the world's great museums.
Through his fusion of Eastern and Western influences, Tapies develops a distinctive style which provokes a disturbing, unspoken dialogue between man and matter where the spiritual struggles with stark reality. Rough earth-coloured backgrounds, where paint is mixed with various substances (sand, fabric, marble, plaster, wire, rope), seem like "walls" which have been slashed, cut and inscribed with hieroglyphics of a primordial language. Impossible to place within a particular movement, Tpies' art reflects an image of chaos tamed only with difficulty; he himself defines his works as "battlefields where wounds are multiplied to infinity".
Tasting note:
Most recently: medium-deep with relaxed rim; nose fragrant, slightly vegetal at first, but harmonious, developing sweetly. Sweet on the palate too, rich, complete, perfect weight. Very good wine. Last tasted Sept 2005 ***(**) 2008 - 2025. MB
