ÉCOLE DE NANCY
Nancy was the birth place and home of Emile Gallé one of the leading figures of the Art Nouveau Movement. He was renowned for his virtuoso glass making but also designed and made furniture and ceramics. The typical attributes of Art Nouveau are symbolism, organic forms, sinuous tendrils and plant forms. Gallé was a student of Botany, Drawing and Philosophy who was also passionate about Nancy and the Region of Lorraine often drawing on the flora and fauna so abundant around him.
The type of Art Nouveau inspired by Gallé relies more on naturalism than stylisation and in 1901 along with, Louis Majorelle, Antonin Daum, Victor Prouvé and Eugène Vallin he founded the École de Nancy (Alliance Provinciale des Industries d'art). It was because of their passion and talent that Nancy became a centre of art, design and architecture that rivaled Paris and that their interpretation of Art Nouveau maybe distinguished as l'École de Nancy. Examples of their work may be viewed today in the Musée de l'École de Nancy.
