Lot Essay

Stephen Moore, 2nd Earl of Mountcashell was the son of Stephen Moore, 1st Earl of Mountcashell (see lot 106). He married, in 1791, Margaret, née King, daughter of Robert King, 2nd Earl of Kingston and sister of George King, 3rd Earl of Kingston (see lots 122 and 128). Based on the perceived age of the sitter and date of execution, it has been suggested that the sitter may in fact be Stephen Moore, 3rd Earl of Mountcashell (1792-1883), son of the 2nd Earl of Mountchashell, who married, in 1819, Anna Maria Wyss.
