GWALTHER, Rudolf (1519-1586) and Kaspar WASER (1565-1625). Archetypi homiliarum festarum. Zurich: Wolphius, 1612. 8° (154 x 89mm). Title within decorative woodcut border. (Occasional light browning and spotting, missing initial 'P' supplied in ink in an early hand to P1r.) Later, possibly 18th-century vellum, blue edges (lacking ties, lightly soiled). Provenance: Michael Regnier (contemporary ink ownership inscription on title) -- sparse corrections in ink in an early hand -- Bibliothek Zoffingen (stamp and ink inscription on title).
ONE OF ONLY THREE KNOWN COPIES of this Protestant tract by Gwalther, edited and published posthumously by Waser. The other two copies are at the Zentralbibliothek Zürich and Lanhydrock House, near Bodmin, Cornwall. Gwalther was brought up in the house of Heinrich Bullinger, the chief Protestant minister in Zurich. There he met an English student, Nicholas Partridge, with whom he became friends. Later, in 1537, when Bullinger entrusted Partridge with a letter to Thomas Cranmer, Gwalther accompanied Partridge to England. During his two month stay he made many contacts and lifetime friends and cemented the links between Zurich and the English reformers.
